Doctor gets three yrs for negligence of duty

A court here Saturday convicted a physician and sentenced him to three years' imprisonment for negligence of duty that caused premature death of a minor boy.Four other accused, however, were acquitted. The convict was identified as Abu Taher Mohammad Golam Murtaza, a physician of Grameen Shasthya Kalyan Kendra in Shaharasti upazila. District and Sessions Judge M Abdus Sobhan Sikdar also fined the doctor Tk 1,000. According to the prosecution, Habibur Rahman, 8, son of Jahangir Hossain, died of excessive bleeding on June 23, 2001, after he was circumcised by Dr Golam Murtaza. Outraged, local people besieged the Shasthya Kendra. Later, the police brought the situation under control. After examining the records and witnesses, the judge handed down the verdict in a packed courtroom.
